Road To The Qatar World Cup 2022
Serbia’s road to the Qatar World Cup has been fairly simple, currently reigning top of their group stage (Group A) with Portugal and Ireland trying to catch up behind. As it stands, Serbia is coasted through their World Cup Qualifier games having won most of their games (drawing two of them).
Although their group is not considered to be one of the hardest groups in the qualifiers - Serbia has still done a great job having not lost to the likes of Portugal and Ireland. They’re also the top scorers of their group stage by scoring 18 goals and conceding 9 goals.
Of course only time will tell how Serbia get on in this competition. It is fair to say that they are not expected to go all the way, however - we have seen underdog stories in the past so be sure to not write Serbia completely off.

A World-Class Midfielder
As alluded to before, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is a world-class midfielder who since joining Lazio - has become one of the most prolific midfielders in world football. He has recently won Lazio’s player of the season along with winning 2 Supercoppa Italiana trophies in 2017 and 2019.
His talent and experience are sure to motivate the rest of the Serbian national football team to as far as they possibly can. He is even in good form having scored two goals for Serbia quite recently.
Serbia’s Greatest Goalscorer
As it stands, Aleksander Mitrovic is the highest scorer for Serbia. Having appeared in 69 games and scored 44 goals for his country. He is also at the peak of his powers at Fulham. Topping the Championship scoring list for the season so far by scoring 34 goals in 33 games. This is 14 goals than the joint second top scorers with 20 (Den Brenton Diaz for Blackburn Rovers and Dominic Solanke for Bournemouth). It’s no secret that Mitrovic will want to increase his impressive stats for his country and he might just be the key for Serbia.
An Exciting Rivalry
We might also be greeted with the return of one of the fiercest rivalries in all of international football - Croatia vs Serbia. This rivalry had stemmed from political roots and is listed as one of the ten greatest international rivalries in world football. The two sides sparked their now-notorious rivalry in 1990 when they were part of Yugoslavia - which dissolved after a series of wars. Should the two sides face off in this year’s World Cup, this will be their fifth time facing each with their previous encounters having Croatia winning once and drawing the other 3 games.
