And with Newcastle being back in the Champions League in the 2023/24 season, this club were sure to make some fireworks upon their return. But why are these European nights so special in Newcastle? Newcastle’s History in Europe
Newcastle United has a somewhat limited history in Europe having not been in the competition too many times, but many football lovers would agree that it is a much better tournament with them in it than without. 1994/95 UEFA Cup
After a long absence from European competitions, Newcastle United returned to the continental stage in the 1994-1995 UEFA Cup. Managed by Kevin Keegan and featuring stars like Peter Beardsley and David Ginola, they had a memorable campaign, reaching the quarter-finals before being knocked out by AS Monaco.
1997/98 UEFA Champions League
Newcastle United qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the 1997-1998 season. They had a strong group stage performance, finishing at the top of their group which included Barcelona, Dynamo Kyiv, and PSV Eindhoven. However, they were eliminated in the second group stage, failing to progress to the knockout rounds.
2002/03 UEFA Champions League
The club qualified for the Champions League once again in the 2002/03 season under manager Bobby Robson. They managed to survive into the second group stage but failed to progress any further.
2004/05 UEFA Cup
In the 2003/04 season, Newcastle had the sacred qualification for the next year’s Champions League however faced much opposition and ended up being knocked out of the tournament early on.
Following their elimination from the Champions League, Newcastle United entered the UEFA Cup for the 2004-2005 season. They reached the quarter-finals before being knocked out by Sporting Lisbon.
2023/24 Champions League
After the success of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side in the league one year prior, the Magpies earned their way into the 23/24 Champions League campaign where they were drawn into the dreaded yearly “Group of Death” alongside Paris Saint Germain, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan.
This task would prove to be much too difficult for Newcastle to overcome despite securing incredible victories against the likes of PSG in an incredible 4-1 win at St James’ Park.

As many Newcastle fans would tell you, St James’ Park is an incredibly special stadium that only a small number of stadiums can rival in terms of atmosphere. It is a unique experience for anyone who has ever stepped foot in the stadium, and this gets even better on a European matchday.
The Unforgettable Moments
Newcastle United have experienced their fair share of outstanding moments in Europe throughout the years some coming in more recent memory and others from many moons ago.
In recent years, Newcastle United hosted PSG in Matchday 2 of the Champions League Group Stages in the 2023/24 season. In this match, Newcastle raced to a 4-1 victory over the Parisians at St James’ Park showing absolute dominance throughout the match.
In 1997, Newcastle also played host to Barcelona in the Group Stages and were to face them on the first matchweek. This would go on to be an incredible performance from the Magpies where Dalglish’s side would race into a 3-0 lead courtesy of an outrageous Faustino Asprilla hat trick.
A few years later, in 2002, Newcastle would have the opportunity to host Juventus in the group stage, coming away with a great 1-0 win and leading to a much-needed three points to help them in the latter stages of the competition.
