Remembering The Most Iconic Fixtures At Anfield

Anfield Stadium, the home of Liverpool Football Club, is known as one of the most iconic stadiums in English and world football. The stadium has witnessed many successful Liverpool teams over the years and hosted some of the most historic football matches in football history.

1.Liverpool vs Chelsea 2005 - Champions League Semi-Final

Anfield hosted one of the most historical and entertaining first-leg semi-finals in the Champions League. One of Liverpool’s greatest-ever managers, Rafa Benitez guided his team to victory and the Champions League final in Istanbul with a win over Jose Mourinho’s famous Chelsea.

With a 0-0 draw in the first leg of the semi-final at Stamford Bridge, hopes were sky-high for the Liverpool fans which generated an electric atmosphere that made for a special night at Anfield. Fans gathered around the ground to soak in the pre-match experience and to give the fans a warm welcome to hopefully give them an extra edge in the game.

Liverpool got off to the perfect start in the game when Luis Garcia gave them the lead in the fourth minute as the ball trickled across the goal line. The game went to the wire as Chelsea was so close to a last-minute equaliser but the chance was missed and Liverpool booked themselves a spot in the final in Istanbul.

2. Liverpool vs. Borussia Dortmund - Europa League Quarterfinal 2016

Liverpool faced Borussia Dortmund in a fixture to remember as the Klopp era was just getting underway. Liverpool faced Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals of the 2015-16 Europa League. Liverpool found themselves 2-0 down at halftime in the second leg at Anfield meaning that they were trailing 3-1 overall.

However, the Anfield crowd witnessed a remarkable comeback with gaols from Divock Origi, Philippe Coutinho, and Mamadou Sakho. Dejan Lovren's towering header in the dying minutes completed the turnaround, causing the Anfield crowd to erupt.

The scenes at the end of the game were like no other, there was pure joy on the faces of the fans as the players showed that never-give-up attitude. Since the appointment of Jurgen Klopp this has now become Liverpool’s identity and will remain while he is in charge.

3. Liverpool vs. Saint-Etienne - European Cup Quarterfinal 1977

Anfield has a long history of hosting memorable European nights, and the quarterfinal clash between Liverpool and Saint-Etienne in the 1976-77 European Cup is no exception. The team were trailing 1-0 from the first leg, and Liverpool needed a comeback to progress.

In the last few moments of the match, Liverpool were trailing 1-0 on the night, Kevin Keegan's header was brilliantly saved, only for David Fairclough to slot in the rebound.

The roar that erupted from the Anfield crowd that night summarised the magic of European nights at this iconic stadium. Liverpool went on to win the European Cup that season, marking the beginning of their European dominance.

Liverpool vs Olympiacos - Champions League 2004

This fixture will be remembered by all Liverpool fans for a lifetime. For Liverpool to advance out of the Champions League group stages they simply had to win by two clear goals. However, Liverpool never did it the easy way and found themselves 1-0 down in the fixture when Rivaldo Drilled a free kick into the back of the net.

Benitez was forced to make substitutions as the game wasn't going as planned. Florent Sinama-Pongolle was brought off the bench by Benitez as he managed to get a goal back within two minutes of entering the pitch.

Liverpool Academy graduate was also then brought onto the pitch and had a game to remember. Mellor put Liverpool in to the lead with his strike but the team was still one goal short of progressing in to the knockout stages.

It was Mellor’s cushioned header that set up a well-struck strike by Steven Gerrard, getting Liverpool their third goal which was enough to get them through the group stages.

5. Liverpool vs. Newcastle United - Premier League 1996

The Premier League witnessed a 4-3 thriller encounter between Liverpool and Newcastle United in 1996, which is remembered in the memories of all football fans as one of the greatest matches that has ever been played.

The fixture was packed with goals and Stan Collymore's dramatic late winner secured a 4-3 victory for Liverpool. The sheer drama and excitement of this fixture have made it a timeless classic, reminding fans of why the Premier League is one of the greatest leagues in the world.

6. Liverpool vs. Barcelona - Champions League Semifinal 2019

In a fixture that defied all odds and left the football world in shock, Liverpool faced Barcelona in the semifinals of the 2018-19 Champions League.

Liverpool was trailing 3-0 from the first leg and required a miracle in the second leg at Anfield to progress to the final. Liverpool produced a performance to remember, winning 4-0 in the return leg at Anfield. Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum each scored twice, completing a mesmorising comeback that catapulted Liverpool into the final.

The atmosphere at Anfield that night electric, with the famous "You'll Never Walk Alone" being sung around the stadium by all Liverpool supporters in full voice whilst they soaked in what they had just witnessed from their team.
