AS Saint-Étienne was founded in 1919 by employees of a Saint-Étienne-based grocery store chain. In 1957 Saint-Étienne won their first domestic league title. Led by goalkeeper Claude Abbes, they won the league by four points over Lens.

In 1982, a financial scandal sent the club into turmoil and subsequently the club was relegated in the 1983–84 season. Although bouncing back numerous times they could never fully rejuvenate to be the team they once were.
