Road To Euro 2016

Although not embarrassed, Romania’s previous two qualifying campaigns ended in failure, with a third place finish in Euro 2012 and a play-off loss for the 2014 World Cup. This campaign was different. Guided by manager Anghel Iordănescu their successful journey to the finals in France was built on solid foundations. Romania qualified with the best defensive record of all teams in the competition, conceding only two goals throughout qualification.

Despite not setting the world alight in an attacking sense, they plotted their way through the qualifying stages without losing. Key wins came against group winners Northern Ireland, who they beat 2-0 and an away victory to Finland. Helped by a series of hard battled draws, they secured their finals berth with a decisive 3-0 win against the Faroe Islands on the last day of the campaign.

Whilst maybe lacking the desired class to mount a serious challenge at the finals, they may prove difficult to break down for any team that they come up against. If you want to see if Romania's resilience will be enough to cause some surprises, you can purchase some of the best Romania tickets here for the Finals in France.## Romania Euro 2016 Fixtures

Key Players

Key Player

Romania’s defensive strength is undoubted. The man at the heart of their back four throughout the campaign was Vlad Chiricheș. The centre back struggled in two years with Tottenham Hotspur and has found starts hard to come by for new team Napoli. Romania will hope that his lack of first team football continues to have no ill-effect on his performance for the national team and he can help maintain their exceptional defensive record.

The Goals

Attack is certainly not Romania’s main strength, a point emphasised by three 0-0 draws in qualifying. Goals were spread across the team throughout the campaign, with two key goals from Constantin Budescu in their victory over The Faroe Islands in only his fourth appearance. Ciprian Marica is the country’s fourth all-time top goal scorer with 25 goals, but only contributed once during the qualifying run. If he can fire up again for the finals his country may be hopeful they can progress past the group stages.

One To Watch Out For

Attacking midfielder Alexandru Iulian Maxim offers an exciting presence in the Romania side. As one of the standout players for Bundesliga outfit VfB Stuttgart the 25-year-old has come of age in his last two seasons. His attacking flair for the Stuttgart team has seen him rewarded with a new four year contract for his club. His countrymen will be hoping he can transfer his quality onto the international stage at the Euros.

Young starlet

Florin Andone is a young striker learning his trade with Cordoba in Spain. Although Romania have more experienced strikers in their ranks he may still be called upon to lead the line.
