Road To Euro 2016
Slovakia quite comfortably qualified from Group C, eventually finished second in the group behind current European champions Spain. Slovakia and their coach Jan Kozak will be pleased to have emerged from a testing group which also included the likes of Ukraine, Belarus, Luxembourg and Macedonia.
At one stage it looked as if Slovakia may win the group after they were victorious in all of their first six qualifying games. This included a magnificent 2-1 win over Spain. A draw against Ukraine and defeats against Spain and Belarus followed, perhaps as Slovakia became complacent. In the final game of the group Slovakia beat minnows Luxembourg 4-2 which left them with a final record of 7 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats in Group C. Slovakia will be hoping to seal a memorable qualifying campaign with further success at their first ever European Championships.
Marek Hamsik was the joint top scorer in the group with five goals, alongisde Spain's Paco Alcacer. Hamsik scored twice against Belarus and Luxembourg and once against Macedonia to help guide Slovakia to France this summer.
Slovakia's Vladimir Weisswas also the joint leader for assists in qualifying with six. The former Manchester City midfielder was level with Poland's Arkadiusz Milik and Senad Lulic of Bosnia. Wales v Slovakia
Both sides are making their debuts in a European Championship and the Slovaks will kick off their Euro 2016 campaign against Wales in Bordeaux. They will be underdogs as they come up against the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey but they will have a real shot at getting all three points. Slovakia will be confident in getting a result after a positive qualifying campaign. Marek Hamsik is Slovakia's danger man and they will be looking for him to exploit Wales' defence as much as possible. His five goals in qualifying have underlined his importance to the team and if he can produce his best displays in France, Slovakia could progress further than expected.
The Goals
Although a midfielder rather than a striker, Marek Hamsik contributed five goals in qualyfying and knows where the net is. However, In attack Slovakia will be hoping Adam Nemeccan add to his three goals in qualifying. The Willem IIstriker has a reputation of playing for a number of clubs in his career which has seen him play in Slovakia, Belgium, America and Holland but the 30 year old can be Slovakia main man in France.
One To Watch Out For
A real character in the Slovakia ranks is Vladimir Weiss. The winger, once of Manchester City, now plays in the Qatari League after spells at Bolton Wanderers, Rangers and Olympiacos. He will be desperate to perform in order to try and ressurect his career. The wide man was the joint leader for number of assists during qualifying after he created six goals for his Slovakia team mates. Weiss creativity can cause teams trouble and if he and Hamsik can continue to click we may see a repeat of some of Slovakia's performances from qualifying, which included a surprise 2-1 win over the Euro 2012 holders, Spain.
Young Starlet
21 year-old midfielder Ondrej Duda has shown he has enough promise to cut it on the international stage after his seven senior appearances. The youngster has represented his country at under 19 and under 21 level and his recent three appearances in Euro qualifying suggest that Jan Kozak is keeping the Legia Warsaw man in contention for Euro 2016.
