The Republic of Ireland gained entry into Euro 2016 courtesy of a 3-1 aggregate win over Bosnia and Herzegovinaover two legs back in November. A brace from Stoke City forward Jon Walters was enough to earn the Republic a 2-0 victory in Dublin after earlier drawing 1-1 at the Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica.

Home games in qualification were played at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin (capacity 51,700). Support for the Republic has been strong since the beginning of qualification and we expect Ireland to take a large contingent of fans over with them to France in the summer.

The Republic of Irleand were placed inGroup D for their UEFA Euro 2016 Qualifying group with the likes of Germany, Poland, Scotland, Georgia and Gibraltar. Euro 2016 had been expanded this year to 24 teams. The top two teams from the nine qualifying groups progressed automatically, with the highest placed team in third also qualifying automatically as the remaining four spots were decided by the play-offs.

The Irish got off to the perfect start with a last minute winner from Aiden McGeadygiving them a 2-1 victory over Georgia. A Robbie Keane hat-trick was the highlight from their second game in Group D as they thrashed Gibraltar 7-0 in Dublin as they maintained their 100% record.

Republic of Ireland then faced their biggest test against the 2014 World Cup winners, Germany. Toni Kroos gave the Germans the lead in the second half, but deep into stoppage time John O'Shea scored to clinch a vital point for Martin O'Neill's side.

However, theRepublic of Ireland then went on a further three matches without a win, including a surprise defeat to their British rivals, Scotland. Republic of Ireland then lost to Poland before drawing the return fixture to Scotland 1-1 in Dublin.

The Irish then returned to winning ways to get their qualification hopes back on track with a 4-0 victory over Gibraltar with Robbie Keane adding another two goals to his tally following his hat-trick earlier in the campaign.

Republic of Ireland then had a crunch fixture with Germany in Dublin as 50,000 fans watched Shane Longscore the winner to give the hosts a surprise victory over the Germans and cap a memorable night on home soil.

However, defeat in their final group game to Poland meant that the Irish had to settle for a third place finish in the Group at the expense of Germany and Poland as their qualification hopes hung in the balance. However, the Irish showed their quality and safely secured their passage to Euro 2016 this summer through the play-offs.
